Gas Storage and Fan Replacement Works

Project Background

Swansea University, a prestigious institution known for its commitment to research and innovation, sought to upgrade its laboratory facilities across both the Bay and Singleton Campuses. Following the successful completion of the Block C Engineering Refurbishment works last year, Focus MEP was appointed as the Principal Contractor for this significant project.

Objectives

The primary objectives of the project were to:

  • Install new laboratory gases to enhance research capabilities.
  • Implement new secure bottle storage and manifold enclosures for safety and compliance.
  • Replace outdated fume cupboard extract fans to improve ventilation.
  • Conduct alterations to the fume cupboard extract ductwork for efficiency.
  • Install BMS (Building Management Systems) and controls for better facility management.
  • Perform thorough testing, commissioning, and calibration of fume cupboards to ensure optimal operation and safety standards.

Project Approach

Collaborative Planning

Working closely with Swansea University's in-house teams to ensure that the installations and upgrades aligned with the university's specific needs and safety standards.

Safety and Compliance

Ensuring all works were carried out in compliance with relevant health and safety regulations, particularly in handling laboratory gases and constructing secure storage enclosures.

Minimising Disruption

Scheduling works to minimise disruption to the university's ongoing research and academic activities.

Execution

  • Laboratory Gases Installation: Focus MEP's team of experts efficiently installed the new laboratory gases, enhancing the research capabilities of the university.
  • Secure Bottle Storage & Manifold Enclosures: These were constructed to the highest safety standards, ensuring secure and compliant storage of laboratory gases.
  • Fume Cupboard Extract Fans Replacement: The outdated fans were replaced with modern, efficient models, significantly improving the ventilation in the laboratories.
  • Ductwork Alterations: The team skillfully altered the fume cupboard extract ductwork, optimizing the airflow and efficiency of the system.
  • BMS & Controls Installation: This installation enables more effective management and monitoring of the laboratory environments.
  • Testing, Commissioning & Calibration: The project concluded with rigorous testing and calibration of the fume cupboards, ensuring they met all operational and safety requirements.

Outcome

The project was successfully completed, significantly enhancing the functionality and safety of Swansea University's laboratory facilities. The university now boasts state-of-the-art laboratory gas installations and ventilation systems, positioning it at the forefront of research and academic excellence.

Conclusion

Focus MEP's expertise in delivering complex mechanical and electrical engineering solutions was once again demonstrated in this project. The successful completion of the New Laboratory Gas Installations and Fan Replacement Works at Swansea University not only reinforces Focus MEP's reputation as a leader in the field but also contributes to the advancement of academic research and innovation.
